Job Summary:

Section lead in the Global Sustainability & ESG (GSE) department which is tasked with the mission to imbue sustainability in all key aspects of business operations as well as achieving all compliance required as a world class shipping line committed to greener shipping practices.


This role leads the Decarbonisation and Future Fuels (DFF) section, developing and executing PIL’s long-term decarbonisation strategy. Responsibilities include the end-to-end implementation of decarbonisation and energy efficiency solutions, and managing group response to evolving landscape of international, regional and national regulatory requirements pertaining to fleet-related decarbonisation and future fuel matters.


The position requires expertise in maritime sustainability, regulatory compliance, and energy transition. Competencies in corporate sustainability, maritime decarbonisation, and project management will be highly valued.


This role will be based in Singapore with occasional travel required.


Key Responsibilities:


This role leads the DFF section and supports AGM, GSE in developing, managing and delivering projects as part of GSE’s workplan. Main responsibilities of this role include but is not limited to:

1. Planning and executing of PIL Group’s long-term decarbonisation roadmap and strategy.

 Monitor IMO MEPC-related emissions development.
 Establish fleet decarbonisation baseline and thereafter, formulate and execute GHG reduction plans.
 Forward planning with Fleet on measures mix to meet annual emissions caps.
 Collaborate with key stakeholders to execute the strategy


2. Monitor and advise on impact of global regulations on PIL’s Fleet Decarbonisation strategy

 Be the subject matter expert from GSE for the organisation on all matters related to upcoming GHG emissions
 Work with Fleet Division to provide management updates on
  • all emissions-related regulations (e.g. CII, EEDI / EEXI, etc) by the IMO and regional regulators (EU, USCG) and their impacts on the fleet
  • impact of upcoming HK Convention for Ship Recycling (IMO, SRTi) on fleet renewal, dovetailing with wider fleet renewal and transition plans


3. Drive cross-departmental initiatives to advance the adoption of Energy Efficiency Technologies (EET) in the fleet to advance group’s decarbonisation strategy:

 Update marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) assessment for EETs as required for management decision-making
 Work with Fleet Division on the technical and commercial evaluation of EETs
 Work with stakeholders to secure approvals for POC/Trials of selected EETs
 Evaluate results of POC/Trials and recommend EETs for wider adoption.
 Lead feasibility studies on Carbon Capture as part of overall fleet decarbonisation strategy.


4. Participate in the identification and adoption of lower carbon fuels to advance PIL’s decarbonisation objectives:

 Participate in future fuel studies with a focus on identifying suitable fuels for implementation in existing and newbuild fleet
 Designated subject matter expert on bio-fuels and all matters related to their adoption in collaboration with Fleet and OPPC, including driving trials and updating procedures for biofuel / future fuels consumption.


5. Support the Group’s Newbuilding Activities:

 Work with the Fleet new-building team in new vessel concept definition and specifications focusing on reduction of GHG emissions intensity by design.
 Participate in matters relating to energy efficiency technology installed, technical document reviews and maker selection.


6. Manage regulatory compliance and ecosystem services to comply with regulations and reporting requirements, in line with Group’s overall decarbonisation strategy.

 Lead efforts on Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) reporting, including meeting of new changes and requirements by Smart Freight Centre / CCWG.
 Assess EUA requirement based on applicable GHG emissions levels and arrange for Class verification in line with EU ETS requirement.
 Onboarding with upcoming regional or national ETS or GHG emissions tax regime applicable to PIL.


7. Enhance PIL Group’s sustainability performance in social aspects relating to seafarers, including aspects relating to labour and human rights and DEI

 Conduct review on labour and human rights aspects for PIL’s seafarers, focusing on ship-specific aspects such as provision of safe working conditions, access to health resources and good living conditions, among others. This also extends to LHR-related policies and supporting the ecosystem for seafarers.
 Conduct review on DEI aspects for PIL’s seafarers, focusing on ship-specific aspects such as gender-appropriate facilities, gender pay gaps, as well as other DEI-related policies or training to support ecosystem for seafarers.
 Develop prescriptive standards for seafarers' living conditions. Conduct gap analysis against regulatory requirements (e.g., MLC) through vessel audits, then recommend improvements and establish PIL standards with Fleet as part of seafarer LHR improvement and retention plans.


8. Support the department in other corporate sustainability initiatives and supporting activities where applicable.


Requirements


Graduate or post-graduate degree with a strong track record in one or more of the below:

  • Technology solutions implementation
  • Decarbonisation strategy development and implmentation
  • Management consultancy


OR


Minimum CoC2 Engineer with shipboard sailing experience as a senior officer


Minimum 7 years of industry experience, preferably in the maritime, transportation or energy sectors. Prior experience in development and management of corporate decarbonisation strategy and execution is an advantage.
