Job Summary

The Senior Epidemiologist/ Epidemiologist provides strategic and technical leadership in epidemiologic research, analytics, and surveillance to support clinical care and public health programmes within Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

This role leads the design and execution of epidemiologic studies in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and population health, integrates real-world data and modern approaches, and translates findings into actionable insights to improve patient and population outcomes. The Senior Epidemiologist also contributes to infectious disease surveillance and supports institutional preparedness and response efforts, when needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC

1. Lead the design and implementation of epidemiologic studies in non-communicable diseases and population health:

o Work with clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians and data managers within the department to formulate and answer important epidemiologic and public health questions in non-communicable diseases

o Manage epidemiologic and population health research and analytic projects and support research collaborations with clinicians both in TTSH and external partners:

  • Assist Principal Investigator to refine study questions, conceptualize the study design and methods and develop the study protocol
  • Perform literature searches and reviews to aid in developing research questions, objectives, protocol and analysis plan
  • Ensure that all study practices and procedures are conducted in accordance with the study protocol, Good Clinical Practice, other applicable regulatory/ ethnical requirements, standard operating procedures and hospital policies.
  • Prepare and ensure timely submission of required documents to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) where appropriate
  • Obtain approvals for data extraction and collection
  • Manage the conduct of the study, including working with data management teams to ensure proper data extraction from electronic data systems, and performing medical case note reviews for data collection
  • Perform statistical analysis and work with medical statisticians to ensure appropriate data analyses
  • Assess, interpret and evaluate the outcomes of research
  • Prepare presentation materials and write-ups to disseminate findings of studies to both internal and external audiences, including manuscripts for publication in international journals and poster or oral presentations at conferences
  • Contribute to grant application and funding acquisition
  • Ensure accurate and complete source documentation, maintain investigator files and all other pertinent research documents and ensure that they are audit-compliant
  • Liaise with relevant internal and external partners where needed to ensure successful implementation of clinical studies
  • Draft presentation and manuscripts resulting from these studies

o Provide epidemiologic consultancy across TTSH clinical community for research and quality improvement projects

2. Support the surveillance and control of infectious diseases during crisis situations:

  • Perform surveillance duties such as activity mapping and hospital contact tracing where necessary; this will include taking on after-hours and weekend covers, and holding the surveillance hotline phone when necessary

GENERAL

3. Lead the design, development and management of research databases

4. Oversee data management processes from input to extraction and cleaning for analysis

5. Ensure adherence to data governance, security and confidentiality data standards

6. Mentor and develop junior epidemiologists, analysts, and research staff

7. Provide technical oversight and establish best practices in epidemiology and data analysis

8. Contribute to teaching, training, and capacity-building initiatives within the department and institution

9. Build and maintain strong collaborations with internal departments, academic partners, and external stakeholders

10. Serve as a key epidemiology advisor within multidisciplinary teams and institutional initiatives.

11. Exhibit understanding of the ethical, legal and technical obligations relating to confidentiality of medical and personal identifiable information

12. It should be noted that the work of the department is of a confidential nature and must not be communicated to other persons except where required for authorised purposes

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Preferably a medical-related basic degree (MBBS or MD or BSc Nursing) but Degree holders in Life Science/ Statistics or other relevant fields may also apply
  • Minimally a master’s degree in public health (with a focus in Epidemiology) or Epidemiology
  • Possesses at least 1-3 years of relevant work experience, or a minimum of 4 years for Senior Epidemiologist appointment, in epidemiology, healthcare management, clinical research with a strong epidemiology focus, or related fields, within healthcare or public health organisations, or academic institutions
  • Experience in infectious disease surveillance or public health response would be an advantage

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Strong foundation in epidemiologic methods and study design
  • Experience with surveillance databases; hospital clinical databases or medical research databases would be an advantage
  • Proficient in using at least one statistical software such as Stata or R. Knowledge of and experience with modern big data analytic methods, including machine learning and deep learning, or knowledge of and experience with qualitative research methodology such as interviews, focus groups, or ethnographic research would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of database systems (e.g., REDCap, relational databases) and proficiency in SQL for data extraction and management would be an advantage
  • Experience in research project management, report writing, scientific presentation and grant application would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of key principles related to data security and protection would be an advantage
