The merger of Aviva Singapore and Singlife was announced in September 2020 and created one of the largest homegrown financial services companies in Singapore in a deal valued at S$3.2 billion. It was the largest insurance deal in Singapore at the time.

Singlife was subsequently acquired by Sumitomo Life in March 2024, one of Japan’s leading life insurers, which valued Singlife at S$4.6 billion, making the transaction one of the largest insurance deals in Southeast Asia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis on market trends, competitors and cross-industry developments in mapping out future disruptions
  • Work with senior leadership to identify, analyze and crystallize key business challenges beyond business-as-usual
  • Identify, evaluate, and experiment with innovative opportunities, translating emerging trends and external signals into structured, commercially viable propositions
  • Drive end-to-end innovation initiatives from ideation through to implementation, managing pilots and proof-of-concepts with clear success metrics and business cases
  • Build and maintain an active external ecosystem network (including insurtechs, fintechs, startups, venture ecosystems, and strategic vendors) to surface relevant opportunities and partnership possibilities
  • Champion an innovation mindset across the organization, designing and facilitating programmes, workshops, and engagements that inspire creative thinking grounded in commercial reality
  • Assess innovation opportunities with a sharp commercial lens — evaluating business models, unit economics, and strategic fit
  • Collaborate closely with business units in the implementation of key initiatives, including but not limited to project management, coordination of internal teams and strategic support
  • Contribute to strategy workstreams, including market research, competitor analysis, and preparation of materials for senior leadership and governance forums
  • Support select enterprise strategy initiatives, collaborating with business units on implementation, coordination, and strategic problem-solving as required

Requirements

Experience

  • Prior track record in innovation, strategy, or a hybrid role — ideally within financial services, insurance, or a consulting environment
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and build relationships with external ecosystem players and partners (including startups, vendors, and innovation partners)
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience evaluating business models, assessing market opportunities, and building or stress-testing business cases
  • Familiarity with innovation methodologies (e.g. design thinking, lean startup, agile experimentation) and the discipline to apply them with rigour
  • Knowledge of insurance products, distribution models, and key business performance levers — with the ability to connect innovation themes to real business problems
  • Structured thinker with the ability to synthesize ambiguous, fast-moving information into clear recommendations for senior stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills — comfortable presenting to and engaging with senior leadership, external partners, and cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly PowerPoint; financial modelling competency sufficient to assess and present commercial cases independently

  • Academic: Bachelor’s / Master’s degree
