Responsibilities:
- Tile Installation: Laying down ceramic, marble, granite, or other types of tiles on floors, walls, and ceilings. Ensuring the tiles are correctly aligned and spaced for a neat finish.
- Surface Preparation: Preparing the surface by cleaning, leveling, and sometimes applying a primer or adhesive. Ensuring the surface is smooth and structurally sound to hold tiles properly.
- Cutting and Shaping Tiles: Using tools like tile cutters or wet saws to cut tiles to fit specific spaces (edges, corners, around obstacles, etc.). Shaping tiles as needed for unique designs or patterns.
- Grouting and Sealing: Filling spaces between tiles with grout for a clean, smooth finish. Sealing grout to prevent moisture from entering and causing damage.
- Surface Maintenance: Cleaning excess grout or adhesive from tiles during installation. Providing aftercare by ensuring the tiles are properly cleaned and maintained.
- Reading and Interpreting Plans: Interpreting architectural or design plans to understand the layout and design of tiling work. Offering advice on tile choices based on customer needs, including color, material, and durability.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensuring that all installations meet safety and building code requirements. Using appropriate tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid injuries.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Technical Skills: Proficient in using tile-cutting and laying tools.
- Attention to Detail: Precision in measurements and tile placement is crucial.
- Knowledge of Materials: Understanding of different tile types, adhesives, and grout.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work on your feet for long periods, often in physically demanding conditions.
- Experience: While formal qualifications are not always required, previous experience or apprenticeships in the trade are highly valued.
Work Environment:
- Residential: Tilers often work in private homes, including kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas.
- Commercial: Tiling in office buildings, retail spaces, and other public places.
- Construction Sites: May work alongside other tradespeople during building or renovation projects.
