Responsibilities
Purpose of this role
The Colourist is responsible for the colour correction, colour grading, and visual enhancement of television, digital, and long-form productions. The role works closely with producers, directors, cinematographers, editors, and post-production teams to achieve the desired visual style while ensuring technical compliance and consistency across all deliverables.
Scope of the role
- Perform colour grading for drama, entertainment, promotional, corporate, and digital content.
- Collaborate with production and post-production stakeholders to develop and execute the creative visual look for projects.
- Ensure all graded deliverables meet technical broadcast, streaming, and platform specifications.
- Support workflow improvements and adoption of industry best practices within the colour grading function.
Pre-grading Preparation
- Prepare colour grading suites, software, and project settings.
- Review offline edits, notes, references, and project requirements.
- Assess workflows, colour spaces, and delivery specifications.
- Liaise with producers, directors, cinematographers, editors, and post supervisors to align creative expectations.
Colour Correction & Grading
- Perform colour correction and creative grading using industry-standard colour grading tools.
- Develop visual styles that support storytelling and creative intent.
- Ensure consistency in colour, exposure, contrast, and image quality throughout productions.
- Resolve image quality issues and optimise footage within technical limitations.
Quality Control and Delivery
- Conduct final visual reviews of graded content prior to delivery.
- Ensure deliverables meet required technical and quality standards.
- Support troubleshooting of grading-related technical issues.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with editors, online artists, audio post teams, and engineering teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
- Keep stakeholders informed of project progress and risks.
- Contribute ideas to improve workflows, efficiency, and visual quality standards.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Media, Film, Digital Arts, Broadcast Production, or related disciplines.
- Relevant certifications in colour grading software (e.g. DaVinci Resolve) will be advantageous.
- Demonstrated understanding of colour theory, cinematography, and visual storytelling principles.
- Experience in colour grading for broadcast, film, digital, or commercial productions.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating colour grading and visual finishing work.
- Experience working with directors, cinematographers, editors, and post-production teams.
- Knowledge of SDR, HDR, Rec.709, colour spaces, and broadcast delivery standards.
- Familiarity with post-production workflows, file-based media management, and finishing processes.
- Understanding of VFX, online finishing, and digital delivery pipelines is advantageous.
- Knowledge of video editing is an advantage.
