Role Summary
The Mail Hygiene Engineer is responsible for securing and optimizing an organization's email environment by implementing email security controls, monitoring mail flow, reducing spam/phishing threats, and ensuring compliance with cybersecurity policies. The role focuses on protecting email infrastructure and enhancing the overall email security posture.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain email security platforms such as Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Exchange Online Protection (EOP), Proofpoint, Mimecast, or similar solutions.
- Monitor email traffic and investigate suspicious emails, phishing attempts, malware, and spam campaigns.
- Configure and manage email authentication technologies including:SPF (Sender Policy Framework)DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance)
- Create and optimize mail flow rules, transport rules, and anti-spam/anti-malware policies.
- Analyze email security incidents and provide remediation recommendations.
- Conduct threat hunting and investigate business email compromise (BEC) attempts.
- Monitor email security dashboards and generate operational/security reports.
- Work with SOC, Security Operations, and IT teams to resolve email-related security incidents.
- Support email security awareness initiatives and phishing simulation programs.
- Ensure compliance with organizational security policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in security audits, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or related field.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, or enterprise email environments.
- Strong understanding of email security concepts, protocols, and standards.
- Experience with email security gateways and threat protection solutions.
- Knowledge of: SMTPDNSSPF, DKIM, DMARC Anti-phishing and anti-malware technologies
- Familiarity with SIEM tools and email security analytics.
- Ability to troubleshoot email delivery and authentication issues.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
