Data Scientist/Engineer (Govt SI)

About the Role

Our client is a Singapore-based government-linked organisation focused on advancing digital development and driving effective, trusted public communications through technology. They are building and enhancing a suite of AI-enabled products and platforms designed to make government services more accessible, reliable, and impactful. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to apply rigorous data science, natural language processing (NLP), and generative AI practices to real-world challenges at scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with policy advisors, communications officers, product owners, engineers, and domain specialists to translate user needs into well-defined analytical and machine learning problems
• Develop and maintain robust evaluation frameworks and benchmark datasets for NLP, generative AI, and other machine learning use cases
• Design and execute structured experiments to assess and improve model quality, accuracy, consistency, reliability, latency, and cost
• Explore and evaluate emerging models, techniques, and technologies, providing evidence-based recommendations aligned with operational and user requirements
• Conduct systematic error analysis, identify performance gaps across use cases and user segments, and help prioritise improvements in collaboration with the team
• Establish appropriate automated and human-evaluation methodologies, accounting for the limitations and risks of individual metrics and AI-assisted evaluation
• Partner with engineers to integrate validated improvements, define quality assurance checkpoints, and monitor model performance in production
• Ensure that data pipelines, experiments, and model decisions are reproducible, well-documented, and aligned with responsible AI, data privacy, and security standards

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, or a related quantitative discipline — or equivalent practical experience
• Demonstrated experience applying data science or machine learning to solve real-world problems, with preference for work involving NLP, generative AI, search, or information retrieval
• Strong programming proficiency in Python, along with working knowledge of SQL, data processing workflows, version control, and software development best practices
• Sound grounding in statistics, experimental design, evaluation methodology, sampling techniques, error analysis, and model validation
• Ability to write maintainable, production-ready code and collaborate effectively with engineering teams to deploy data science solutions
• Experience with multilingual NLP, translation quality evaluation, or collaboration with linguists and language reviewers (is a bonus)
• Familiarity with cloud-based AI services, vector search, MLOps, production monitoring, or responsible AI frameworks (is a bonus)
• Prior experience developing AI products in government, regulated, or other high-assurance environments (is a bonus)
