Major Gifts Officer
ST. JOSEPH'S INSTITUTION INTERNATIONAL LTD.
Period of work: 4 years Term Contract.
Major Gifts Officer
Overview
The Major Gifts Officer is a newly created, campaign-critical role responsible for building and managing a qualified portfolio of major and principal gift prospects (generally rated at $100,000 and above) in support of SJI International's New Campus Capital Campaign including the Preschool. Reporting directly to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), this role leads the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of the school's most significant donors, working in close partnership with the CAO, CEO, and Fundraising Committee to secure the leadership and major gifts required to reach the campaign target ahead of the new campus opening in January 2030.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising & Portfolio Management
● Build, manage, and grow a qualified portfolio of major and principal gift prospects rated at $100,000 and above, in line with the campaign's gift table.
● Lead the full cultivation-to-solicitation cycle for assigned prospects: identification, qualification, cultivation, ask, closing, and stewardship handover.
● Develop individualised cultivation and solicitation strategies for top prospects, in partnership with the CAO and, where appropriate, the CEO and Fundraising Committee.
● Personally solicit gifts within an agreed authority level; support the CAO and CEO in solicitations above that threshold.
● Achieve annual and campaign-phase fundraising targets aligned to the capital campaign gift table.
Campaign Strategy & Operations
● Contribute to the ongoing refinement of the campaign gift table, case for support, and solicitation strategy as the campaign progresses.
● Support the CAO in preparing Fundraising Committee materials, briefings, and meeting agendas.
● Track and report portfolio activity, moves-management stages, and pipeline health on a regular (at least monthly) cadence.
● Ensure all prospect activity is properly recorded and kept current in the school's Donor Management CRM (currently ToucanTech), consistent with the school's data and gift-clearance policies.
● Coordinate with the Preschool Sponsorship & Major Gifts Lead and the Annual Giving Manager to ensure shared prospects are not approached for multiple asks without coordination.
Donor Relations & Stewardship
● Ensure major donors receive timely, personalised acknowledgement and stewardship consistent with their gift level and the school's donor recognition policy.
● Liaise with Finance and the Advancement Services Senior Executive to ensure gift agreements, restricted-use terms, and naming commitments are properly documented and honoured.
● Prepare briefing notes and talking points for the CAO, Head of School, and Board members ahead of major donor meetings.
Prospect Research & Pipeline Development
● Work with the Prospect Research & Advancement Operations Executive to identify, research, and qualify new major gift prospects.
● Maintain up-to-date prospect ratings, capacity assessments, and next-action steps for the assigned portfolio.
● Monitor giving trends and capacity indicators to refine prospect strategy over the course of the campaign.
Administration & Compliance
● Ensure all fundraising activity complies with the school's gift acceptance, due diligence, and gift clearance policies.
● Support budget tracking for major donor cultivation and stewardship activities.
● Undertake any other duties as reasonably assigned by the Chief Advancement Officer.
Qualifications & Skills
● Degree in a relevant field; a postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
● Minimum 5–7 years of fundraising experience, with a demonstrated track record of personally soliciting and closing gifts of $100,000 or above.
● Prior capital campaign experience strongly preferred.
● Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the gravitas to engage confidently with high-net-worth individuals, board members, and senior corporate leaders.
● Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing gift proposals and briefing materials for senior leadership.
● Experience with donor management systems/CRM (e.g. ToucanTech or equivalent) and moves-management methodology.
● High degree of discretion, integrity, and sound judgement in handling confidential donor information.
● Willingness to work evenings/weekends for donor events as required, and to undertake occasional travel for donor cultivation.
